The numbers · search and traffic, sourced

More of the asking moves to AI. Less of it ends in a click.

These are the figures we use when we talk about how discovery is changing. Every one has a named source, a date window and a method, and each is marked by how much weight it can bear. Where sources disagree, we show the range instead of picking the number we like.

The volume

AI search is real. How big depends on who counts.

Google handles more than five trillion searches a year. Against that, estimates of ChatGPT’s search volume range from about 12% of Google’s in an independent study to about 20% in OpenAI’s own count, announced this week.

The range is the honest number. The trend runs one way.

The click

The volume moved. The traffic didn’t.

Search engines used to make a deal with every site: let the crawler in, and visitors come back. AI assistants read far more than they send. Google still delivers almost all of the referral traffic the web gets.

Answered in place

The answer arrives. The visit doesn’t.

On both sides of the line, more questions end where they were asked. Google keeps more searches on its own page, and AI answers rarely link out at all. Being chosen inside the answer is starting to matter more than ranking for the click.

And ChatGPT is reaching for the web less often, not more: it ran a web search on 34.5% of queries in February 2026, down from 46% in late 2024, according to Semrush’s analysis of US clickstream data.

What it means

Discovery is moving inside the answer.

Put the three together. People ask AI a real share of what they used to ask a search engine. The answer comes back without a visit. And the platforms are building paid placements inside the answer itself. A business that only measures clicks will see less and less of how customers find it.

The next step is already visible: the agent that finds the product is starting to buy it too. What matters then is whether your store can tell which agents to let in, and on whose authority they act.

The ledger

Every figure, with its receipts.

Primary means the company or network reporting its own measured data. Research means an independent study with a published method. Self-reported means a company’s own claim about itself, unaudited.

Can an agent buy from you?

When discovery happens inside the answer, the next question is whether the agent that found you can get in. Check your store free, or open a workspace and see where you stand.
